Mission Ministries Team
June 10, 2005

The committee met on Friday, June10, 2004 at the home of Alice Zwart.  Attending were Mary Alice D’Ambrosio, Alice Zwart, and Laura Henrikson.

We are looking into doing some work concerning Africa, Southeast Asia and India.  Alice will check on getting brochures and info through our denomination and including Church World Service and Focus.  Alice is also continuing to pick up our mail.

We voted to make a donation of $150.00 to the Rindge Food Pantry.  Mary Alice will take care of filling out paperwork and submitting.

We have not done a donation to the Community Kitchen as yet and would also like to raise more money for the Rindge Food Pantry.  We have tentative plans to do a summer time luncheon after church in either July or August.  Plans are for cold soups, salads, and fruit and cookies for dessert with donations to the Kitchen and/or Rindge Pantry.  Laura will speak with Jim regarding what Sundays would be available.  Possibly have a speaker for a Mission Moment.  Another possible idea is to do something at the Summer Fair in July or Rindge Woman’s Club Craft Fair on August 13 on the common.

The Mission Ministries Policies and Procedures 2005 were discussed with a few minor revisions.  It will now go to Church Council.

The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for July 10 after the worship service.  This may change as possibility of fundraising in July may require a meeting ahead of the 10th.  Prayer was given by Alice at the end of our meeting.

Respectfully submitted,
Laura A. Henrikson, Secretary

Addendum

Luncheon has been put on hold at this time as we look into doing something at one of the Fairs this summer to raise money for the Rindge Food Pantry.  We feel doing something in public for the Pantry will help recognize our church’s involvement.  There is already luncheon food at the Summer Fair.  A group, Destination Imagination, is doing hot dogs at the Craft Fair.  Possible ideas for that day may be to do fudge, popcorn, watermelon, desserts- cookie, pies, cakes and/or bake table and hopefully people in church would help by donating some of the items.  We are searching for ideas!  Community Kitchen item may be put off until fall.  Stay tuned for further announcements!

Music Committee
June 13, 2005

The group met on June 13, with Chair Mary Lu Mathis, Tony D’Ambrosio and Mary Jane Sawyer in attendance.

Tony reported that he had received a quote of $1350 from Mike’s Wood (Mike Ellis), for construction of the altar railing. Tony is pursuing quotes from two other vendors to do this work.

Due to the fact that piano tuning was not scheduled for December 2004, as it should have been, we will schedule tunings for September and December of this year.

Cleaning of the choir robes will be done over the summer, at an approximate cost of $100. Tony will collect the robes for cleaning.

In an effort to accurately track our budgeted spending, Mary Lu reported that expenses this period included $70 for our organist’s membership in the American Guild of Organists, and $80 for gifts.

We are continuing to research our policy regarding organist payment for special functions, and are reviewing, with an eye toward possibly rewriting our organist’s contract.

Tony continues his search for a prominent organ soloist to perform at our Organ Concert, scheduled for the last Sunday in October.

Tony will seek set-up and teardown help for our Attic Treasures table at the July 23rd fair. He will make announcements during church services, and ask parishioners to bring their ‘treasures’ to the church the week commencing July 10.

The July meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 14, at 7:00pm at Mary Lu’s home.

FLOCK
Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 2:00pm
Home of Marty & Bernice Ferwerda on Red Gate Lane

Our intergenerational group (For The Love of Christian Kids) focused on fun, fellowship, and rearing our young people within a community of faith, will meet Saturday, July 16 at 2pm at the home of Marty and Bernice Ferwerda on Red Gate Lane, on the shores of Emerson Pond.  Young and old, families and singles are invited to bring a salad, side dish, or dessert.  Drinks and items for the grill will be provided.

Our last meeting, Game Night at the Parsonage, was held in June.  Due to the small size of our gathering, we pitted the ‘old folks’ against the  ‘young folks’ as we competed in several very spirited games.  We started out with a ‘guess who’ game, where each person had a nametag of a real or fictional character on their back.  Asking questions of others, each person had to guess who they were, based on ‘yes or no’ answers.  Our identities ranged from Norman May to the Easter Bunny.  Next, we competed in building the tallest ‘Jenga’ tower.  While the young ones raced out to an early lead, the slow and mostly steady old ones came within a few blocks of achieving a tie.

We finished the night with ‘Scene It’ a DVD game based on movies.  While it favored our young ones, the old folks kept it close up until the very end.  We even had an ‘afterparty’, where our young people played a round of Pictionary until they were finally thrown out of the house around 11pm.  Participants agreed unanimously that the evening was a success, and that we should do it again.

Come to the Table

Several years ago, our church officially declared the communion table open to children, a departure from the traditional Reformed practice of waiting until they had been sufficiently instructed through confirmation, and were ‘ready’ to receive the sacrament.  Children can know in their heart the importance of the sacrament, and we feel its important to help them to understand and appreciate the mystery and many layers of meaning of this uniquely Christian experience.

To make the learning fun, interesting, and hands-on, we periodically conduct a ‘Come to the Table’ workshop, which allows us to learn as we experience the many aspects of communion.  Our next Come to the Table workshop is scheduled for Friday, July 15 at 6:30pm.  We will meet at the Church for a simple meal provided by our Deacons, and then we will rotate through workshop stations that will teach us about the meaning and mystery of the Lord’s Supper.  Note:  this event is not only for children.  Many adults have attended in the past, and have found it to be meaningful and helpful in their own spiritual journey.  After visiting all the stations, we gather together and share a simple communion together around the table.  Plan to attend if you seek to experience communion in a whole new way!

Ferwerda Thank You

To our dear church family and friends:

We want to thank all of you for your overwhelming support when we were going through a very difficult ordeal beginning last Veteran’s day and lasting for many months.  God answered all of the prayers that were lifted in Martin’s behalf.  We were cheered and comforted by the many things you sent to us, those wonderful “Comfort Cards” sent by the Church School kids, as well as some of the adults, all the cards you sent, some of them handmade, the dish gardens, the candy, casseroles, homemade spaghetti sauce with meat balls, and the rides to Manchester that you provided for us.  When I was so busy taking care of Martin that I didn’t have time to cook, there was always something provided for us to eat.  Phil 4:19 says “My God will supply all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus” and that is exactly what He did through you and many other friends all over the world.  Many people were praying for him and God answered those prayers. This has been a very difficult experience for us but at the same time, it has been a mountaintop spiritual experience.  God is good.

Thank you all so very much.

Sincerely,
Martin & Bernice Ferwerda

Outdoor Worship

Don’t forget to join us at the Cathedral of the Pines on Sunday, August 7 at 10:00am for a joint worship service with our sisters and brothers in Christ from the United Church of Jaffrey.  The service, led by Pastor Jim while Rev. Beardslee is on vacation, will feature a combined choir and the sharing of communion.  Note:  churches are now allowed to collect offerings at the Cathedral, so please bring your envelopes and offerings with you.  Details about a time for fellowship after the service will be forthcoming.

Outdoor Ministries

Many parents, campers, and friends of the New Hampshire Conference's Outdoor Ministry programs have asked us, "Can I help?"

The answer is "Yes!"

From volunteering as a summertime Unit Leader to traveling to Pine Mountain for one of the semi-annual Work Weekends, from becoming part of the new Sunday Volunteers program to purchasing an item for donation from the Wish List, there are ways for everyone to help, young and old alike!

Become a Unit Leader - Want to go to camp? Join us for a week as a Unit Leader, sharing responsibilities with another adult and living in a cabin community with 6-10 campers from your local church or assembled from churches across the state. Donate a week of your time, and play a vital role in the development of your campers' faith journey and the programs of the Conference's Outdoor Ministries programs. Unit Leaders are needed for on-site camps at Horton Center and Geneva Point Center, as well as in Expeditions (both on- and off-site) camps.

Go to Work Weekend - Held the last weekend of May and the first weekend of October each year, Horton Center Work Weekends are an excellent way to give back to NHC's Outdoor Ministries. Volunteer laborers -skilled or otherwise - are needed to perform a number of vital tasks aimed at opening and closing the site in the spring and fall. Bring your youth group, your family, or call your cabin mates and treat it as an on-site reunion - Work Weekend needs you!  Call Gregg Pitman or Judy Lloyd at (603) 225-6647 to register today. May 2005 Work Weekend is scheduled for Friday evening, May 27th, through Sunday, May 29th.

Become a Sunday Volunteer - Beginning in 2005, we will pilot a new program aimed at increasing our ability to warmly welcome guests, parents, and campers as they arrive at Horton Center on Sundays. Sunday Volunteers will augment the summer staff and provide coverage in a number of non-critical registration day areas, including the HCPM Store, initial check-ins and registrations, and site tours for first-time parents/families. If you are a friend of Pine Mountain - perhaps a present/former Unit Leader, parent of a longtime camper, or past staff member and are interested in helping out on-site during summer Sundays, please contact Volunteer Coordinator John Tostenson at johntostenson@msn.com.

Donate a Wish List Item or to our Campership Fund

  • Running our programs requires a great deal of time, energy, and talent from a group of very special staff and volunteers. However, there are material needs we have as well - needs which, when addressed, will help us continue to grow and expand our ministry. Please consider sponsoring items from our Wish List below. Contact Outdoor Ministries Director Gregg Pitman at gpitman@nhcucc.org or (603) 225-6647 with questions.
  • We believe every child should have the chance to attend summer camp at Horton Center or Geneva Point. No child should be denied access to the camping experience due to lack of funds. All the Camp Store funds are donated to the effort, but it's still not enough. Individuals can help, as can youth groups or church groups - consider having a fundraiser to help needy campers get to camp! Every little bit can help any child get an amazing camping experience at either of our sites. If you would like to make a donation to the fund please contact Gregg Pitman at gpitman@nhcucc.org or (603) 225-6647.
