Celebration of Discipline

The Celebration has begun, but it's not too late to start! We are reading Richard J. Foster's book Celebration of Discipline, and gathering once a month for a spiritually-uplifting gathering that includes discussion, sharing, prayer, and meditation. Our introductory gathering netted 9 individuals willing to take this journey together, and we're hoping to gather a few more before we really get started. If you're interested in getting in on this exciting endeavor, here's what do to: Buy the book, (available from most bookstores or online); Read Chapters 1 and 2; and come to our next gathering, Tuesday February 27 at 7 pm at the church. Please call Pastor Jim (899-5722 office, 899-2268 home) if you've got any questions.

Common Grounds Coffeehouse

Our opening night was a success, with about 40 people in attendance and good publicity before and after. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the music and seemed excited about coming again. Our next Coffeehouse is scheduled for February 9 at 8 pm. Our featured artist is the Marcy Hill Band, featuring Gary Skillings who plays the banjo with The Right Path, the gospel bluegrass band that helped to lead worship in January. Gary brings three other accomplished musicians for a combination of old and new bluegrass and jazz sure to delight. Please come and see for yourself or tell a friend, so that we can continue to build on our success. If you're interested in helping with any aspect of the coffeehouse, please call Pastor Jim (899-2268)

February 9 - The Marcy Hill Band www.marcyhill.com
A rock solid mold of some of New England's finest musicians - The Marcy Hill Band's hard driving sound stems from their background in bluegrass, classical, rock and jazz. These seasoned veterans have combined talents to create an unmistakable sound. With driving instrumentals and tight harmonies, the band offers traditional and progressive bluegrass with a modern twist. Members of the band include: Gary Skillings, a native of Milford Connecticut, now residing in Peterborough, a renowned and award-winning banjo and guitar player, and Steve Abdu, who has played bass with Jonathan Edwards and Martin Mull. In the early seventies, he was a member of one of the most successful Boston bands, London Records recording artists "Orphan", an opening act for such bands as the Allman Brothers, The Byrds, BB King, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Hot Tuna to name a few.

The Mission Ministries Team plans to sell organically grown Coffee, Tea, Cocoa and Chocolate on the last Sunday of each month at Fellowship Hour.  There will be a variety of selections available.  However, if you have a favorite product that you would like us to stock, please ask and we will try and make it available.  Also, if you need a product in between scheduled sales, just ask Mission Team members and they will be glad to get it for you.

Equal Exchange provides these products.  Their mission is “to provide a product that is economically just and environmentally sound through a mutually beneficial relationship between the farmers and the consumer.”  Please help us support this worthwhile project.

TOWN – WIDE YARD / GARAGE SALE
MAY 5th, 2007 (8 AM to 3 PM)

The First Congregational Church in Rindge will host a town-wide yard / garage sale on
May 5th, 2007 from 8 AM to 3 PM. (RAIN OR SHINE)

This event is open to all town residents. Sellers must pre-register and addresses will be put onto an up-dated map of Rindge.

The Church will charge a fee of $10 (10) dollars and will mark town maps with the location of all sellers. The Church will also have paid advertisements for this event in several newspapers so that we may attract shoppers from outside the Rindge area.

Sellers will be responsible for displaying, marking and selling their own goods. All monies received will remain with the seller.

Maps will be available to all buyers & bargain hunters, (FREE), beginning at 7 AM on May 5th at the Church. Coffee & donuts will also be sold at this time.

“House” Prizes will be found at 3 locations on the map. When shoppers pick-up their map they may buy tickets. These tickets will be dropped into contains where the prizes are found and a drawing will be held at 3 PM at each of the prize locations.

This is a great way for all townspeople to get a handle on their unwanted “stuff” before the summer begins. During these long, dark, cold and icy days, as you clean a closet, cabinet, the basement or garage, just set items aside & you will be ready for the sale.

For this to be a successful event, we will need a few volunteers – especially on the day of the event. If you are interested in helping, please contact Jane Hannon at 899-5789.

Curriculum was ordered for the K-3 Classes

Youth Group Activities – we will brainstorm ideas for upcoming activities and try to arrange something soon.

We have someone interested in the Youth Group Advisor position, but the budget money was not approved for this year. Trustees may come up with a plan. We shall wait and see.

Fundraisers were discussed and we decided that each committee is welcome to do their own fundraisers, but a Church-wide fundraiser was not in the plans at present.

All Sunday school teachers and advisors are welcome to join our committee meetings that are held the 2nd Sunday of each month at 11:30 am. Comments, feedback and suggestions are always welcome. We appreciate their time and effort for our children and anything we can do to help, or make things better, are our top priority. Amy Lanza will try to call them on a regular basis to touch base and get feedback.

Music Committee
January 14, 2006

The Committee met January 14, following the Sunday Service. In attendance were: Chair Mary Lu Mathis, Tony D’Ambrosio, Bob Popple, and Mary Jane Sawyer.

Mary Lu reported that Robin Dinda has accepted our request to be the featured artist at our Organ Recital this year, which is scheduled for October 21, at 3 PM. Mr. Dinda is the husband, and performing partner, of Renea Waligora, who performed beautifully at this year’s concert. The group is excited to have secured this commitment. Mary Lu will contact the town to arrange for use of the church hall, for the reception which will follow.

Tony has completed revision of the Organist Contract, and has presented it to Council. Bob signed it during our meeting.

The Committee discussed the first "Common Grounds" musical evening, which was held Friday in the church hall. We will encourage and support future evenings, feeling that such offerings are an important musical contribution to church, and to church/town relations.

Mary Lu will discuss with the Treasurer invoices for organ and piano tunings, which appear to remain unpaid.

Tony reviewed the 2007 annual budget.

Our next meeting is scheduled for February 11.

Mary Jane Sawyer - for the Committee

Mission Ministries Team
January 14, 2007

The Mission Ministries Team met Sunday, January 14, 2007 at 11:30am. Present were Laura Henrikson, Mary Alice D’Ambosio, Una Bigelow, Marie Marr and Rev. Jim Melhorn. Laura opened the meeting with a prayer.

Laura reviewed the correspondence that had been received and Mary Alice gave a Church Council report. The Mission Ministries Budget has been severely cut and will present a challenge to be workable. Fund raising will be needed.

The sale of Equal Exchange Coffee is going very well. Laura is working to set it up so we can order on line. It was decided that Marie would take an inventory and then keep it up to date, deducting sales and adding deliveries, so we will have a little more information and control. We have a new storage area in the Men’s Closet. Una, Mary Alice and Marie will set up and sell coffee at the Fellowship Hour on January 28. We will also try selling coffee at the next Common Grounds Coffee House.

The Mission Ministries Team will sponsor a Chili Supper on Saturday February 3rd, at 6pm. We will serve chili, cornbread, salad, dessert and beverages. We will ask for volunteers to make dessert.

Speakers from the Monadnock Area Transitional Shelter will provide the program. MATS mission is to provide temporary housing, support and referral services to homeless persons; and to educate the community on issues of homelessness and advocate for possible solutions. In the first 6 months of 2006, MATS sheltered 15 people from Antrim, Peterborough, Rindge, & Washington, NH. and had to refer 32 people to other shelters

A free will offering will be collected at the Chili Supper and donated to MATS.

It was decided the next meeting would be February 11, at 11:30am. Rev. Jim closed the meeting with a prayer.

Respectfully submitted,
Marie Marr, Acting Secretary

The Quiet Sermon

A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going.  After a few weeks, the pastor decided to visit him.

It was a chilly evening. The pastor found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire.  Guessing the reason for his pastors visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited.

The pastor made himself at home but said nothing.  In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs.  After some minutes, the pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone.  Then he sat back in his chair, still silent.  The host watched all this in quiet contemplation.  As the one lone ember's flame flickered and diminished, there was a momentary glow and then its fire was no more.  Soon it was cold and dead.

Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting.  The Pastor glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave.  He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it.

As the pastor reached the door to leave, his host said with a tear running down his cheek, "Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon.  I shall be back in church next Sunday."
