Some Opening Thoughts

Excerpt from Psalm 1, NLT

Oh, the joys of those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or stand around with sinners,
or join in with scoffers.

But they delight in doing everything the LORD wants;
day and night they think about his law.

They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
bearing fruit each season without fail.
Their leaves never wither,
and in all they do, they prosper.

Going Out With Joy

You shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace;
the mountains and the hills will break forth before you;
there'll be shouts of joy, and all the trees of the field
will clap, will clap their hands.

And all the trees of the field will clap their hands;
the trees of the field will clap their hands;
the trees of the field will clap their hands
while you go out with joy.

Four Questions
Question 1: Where are we headed?

Exodus 13:21 By the day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so they could travel by day or night
Mark 16:7 Go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.'

  • Where do you think we are headed as a church?
  • Are you happy about that or worried?
  • What do you think is God's vision for this church in the future?
  • Is that different from your vision?
  • If we all have a different vision, how  can we come up with a single vision?
  • Question 2: What kind of future are we building?

    Isaiah 54:2 Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back,' lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes.
    Isaiah 66:22 'As the new heavens and the new earth that I make will endure before me,'
    declares the LORD, so will your name and descendants endure.'

    • What would you like someone to say about your contribution to the history of this church?
    • What things are we doing to build a future for this church?
    • What else might we do? What might we do better?
    • How does our vision from Question 1 influence how we build for the future?
    Question 3: What are our strengths, gifts, and competencies?

    1 Corinthians 12:4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all people.
    Romans 12:4-5 Just as each of us has one body and many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others

    • When you look at our church, what do we do well?
    • What do you hear about us from others, or newer members?
    • How could the church best utilize your gifts and talents?
    • What talents/gifts would you like to see explored further?
    Question 4: What is God calling us to accomplish in mission?

    Isaiah 6:8 Then I heard the voice of the LORD saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said; 'Here am I, send me!'
    Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

    • Go back to your answers from Question 3.  Looking at our strengths, gifts and competencies, what types of mission seem to naturally flow?
    • Could you be a part of that mission? How?
    • How does your personal mission fit in with the mission of the whole church?
    • How do you feel about growth in the church? anxious? afraid? impatient? hopeful?

    Following the small group sessions, we all got back together to compare our discussions.

    Lastly, we symbolically planted our prayers and ideas by making potted plants that will be put in the Sanctuary where we can nurture them and watch them grow.

    And while we were making the plants
    these two snuck back for some more clam chowder!!
